Do you notice how some people around you seem to have their life all together and others seem totally overwhelmed by their life? I have observed 3 things about people who have their lives together: 1. They take control of their life 2. They are moving toward something 3. They are unfazed by barriers
- Take Control of your life
I was observing an aquantance recently who often tells me how crazy life feels. Some people’s lives are crazy, but I firmly believe you don’t have to be a victim about that. This person works from home and has 2 young kids. As a parent of 2 young kids, I can relate to that feeling like life is out of control. However, you can decide how you deal with it, what extra stuff and activities you take on and how you respond to the craziness.
Was this person looking for a way to simplify their life? No, you know what they did? Let their kid talk them into getting a puppy. I love dogs, our sweet dog died 2 years ago and I still miss her every day, my kids constantly ask for another dog and I am torn. With our life already being very full, kids, kids sports, jobs, real estate business, etc, our life doesn’t have room for a dog. Neither did this person’s life, but they got the dog. As the stay at home\work from home parent, tbis person is home all day with said puppy dealing with the chewing, peeing, barking and general puppy challenges. In the long run this family may be really happy they got the puppy, I really hope they are. It does seems odd to me that in the midst of a time when they feel totally overwhelmed, they intentionally added chaos into their lives. They now complain about it as if they had no choice. NO, you did have a choice and you chose crazy.
Don’t sit back and let life happen to you, take control of your life! Feel too busy? What can you cut out? What activities are not moving you towards your goals or are just time wasters (think TV, socializing with people you don’t even like, etc…).
2. Move towards Something
Same friend who just got the puppy- In a conversation about goals this friend shared that he really wants to write a book. That’s awesome! I asked when the last time was that he worked on it? “Haven’t started it, too busy.” Hmm, well what if you set aside 30 minutes a week to do just a bit of writing just to get started? “Too busy, really wish I could, hate my job… now I have this puppy and the kids have soccer”… blah blah blah excuses. In the words of one of my favorite authors, “If it is important you will find a way, if not you will find an excuse.”-Grant Cardone
Humans are meant to have a purpose, when we get stagnant we start feeling depressed, unsatisfied and unfulfilled. The purpose or goal doesn’t have to be huge, it could be keeping your tiny humans alive or raising them to be decent people, mastering a musical instrument, running a marathon, volunteering at your church. It really doesn’t matter what the goal or purpose is, but you need one and you need to be working toward it.
3. Don’t let Barriers Stop you
There are a lot of barriers in real estate. Finding deals, finding lenders who will fund your deals, coming up with the down payment, the list goes on and on. We have had challenges finding lenders to lend to us as we are not your typical straight forward loan applicant. We reached out to multiple banks and lenders before we found a lender that is not phased by our complicated situation (multiple properties in various stages of renovating, seasoning, etc.). We kept working, kept trying, and found a way. We didn’t quit when lenders turned us down. Even now that we have an established relationship with a lender, the underwriters still ask for crazy and seemingly unreasonable things each time we are applying for a loan on a new property. The process if VERY frustrating, but that doesn’t stop us from pushing forward.
I don’t have it all figured out, these are things I am working towards. When I feel myself go to that victim mentality where life is happening to me, I remind myself that I am in control, working toward a goal my spouse and I are determined to achieve (financial freedom through growing our real estate portfolio). I know we have chosen to add this particular variety of temporary crazy to our life. With that perspective it doesn’t feel overwhelming, we chose it, we are embracing it and are finding a way to fit it into our lives and make progress on our goals.
You are in control of your life, go tackle your goals, FIND A WAY!
